Why a Briscoe family genealogy site?

This site is intended to become a collaborative genealogical research repository for documentation, history, stories and photos.

More specifically, the "MY Genealogy" pages focus on my ancestor’s family branch, Gamaliel(is) Briscoe and Marie Craven and their descendents.

Information about other "Briscoe" ancestors and descendants will not be presented there. I have created another completely new database for other Briscoes. This "Briscoe" database and the web site usage is made available to ALL without having to be authorized and contains only "Public" records. A part of the "Briscoe" genealogy will be "My Genealogy."

Genealogists needed - Ultimately, to have an accurate, up-to-date and interesting family history web site will require the participation of many interested family members, and I welcome the contributions of all interested members to either database. I will accept your contributions in any form and convert them for web display.

Corrections - What we need is any interested persons from these branches willing to trace, update and document the history of their closest relatives in their particular branch. This site is just a good start (check the database on this site), so let me know if you have photos, documentation, histories or just use the contact page to send me a correction.

This site's program is purchased from The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding ©, written by Darrin Lythgoe 2001-2004.

The history of the site: from scraps of paper to the worldwide web

I first became interested in the family genealogy many years ago. My hope was to be able to create the Briscoe tree showing origins and eventually to publish a database containing our genealogies. Others in my family wanted to create histories and gather stories.

Unfortunately for the database, book, or CD, I had a job and I had a "life" - genealogy is interesting but you can't let it be all time consuming to the exclusion of all else. The "genealogy CD" became a project to do in retirement or just a nice thing to do. The piles of paper, photographic negatives and records were not gathered because of reluctance in allowing a treasured item out that each family had filed away their records. Apart from the occasional brief burst of interest during reunions these records have gathered dust for many years. Other people have expressed interest and discussed their plans in doing this same project and were at various stages.

The problem is I have lots of plans - the danger is that the family history database/book/cd could take another 10 years, as a whole new generation of the family has appeared since my first efforts. Moreover, there is always something new to add and genealogical projects rarely have an end. Worse still, if uncles or aunts disappear, someone may just throw out all their old papers and all those documents will go down the gurgler. Family history is pretty meaningless if it is not shared with the family!

Thankfully, technology has now provided the answer to this dilemma and I am setting up this website to make the information accessible to all. The family history project becomes a visible and ongoing work, which I hope you will enjoy, participate in and I encourage you to contribute where able.
